Ludwig von Mises

1881-1973

Ludwig von Mises is the leading figure of the Austrian School of economics, founded by Carl Menger. A professor and economist of extensive erudition and brilliant intellect, his work goes far beyond economic analysis and encompasses numerous ethical, legal, and philosophical perspectives. In his treatise 'Human Action,' Mises presents a comprehensive view of economics, freeing it from mathematical positivism and mere statistics, to treat it as the fundamentally human science - and no less rigorous for that. As a proponent of the method known as 'praxeology,' or the 'logic of human action,' the author observes that economic events result from the concrete actions of individuals, whose intention is always to move from a state of lesser satisfaction to a state of greater satisfaction, regardless of the intrinsic moral value of that state.
